Topic Choice

Topic: Illustration
(or possibly Music Composition)

Im actually still debating on my senior project topic. Im deciding on either Illustration or Music Composition, but Im am leaning more towards Illustration.
The reason  I chose this topic is because of the fact that I love drawing and sketching. Although I mostly draw in the style of Japanese anime, I hope that through this project I will be able to strengthen my skills and knowledge in other and more realistic forms of art pertaining to illustration.
I hope that through this year long study of illustration I can, once again, strengthen my skills and one day work at a variety of popular gaming or visual effects companies like Weta Digital, the company that created the effects for Lord of the Rings and Avatar. Another hopeful goal of this year long study is to put my art works into a portfolio to get into college as an Art Major.
The other topic Im still juggling with is music composition. I have always been interested in how music creates the mood and pretty much makes movies worth watching. Without music scores playing in the background of movies, they just wouldnt be worth the ten bucks. If I choose this topic I would hope to learn and create my own songs and scores.

  1. Sorry to confuse you...this blog should be named Topic Choice. The label should still be Research Semester 1.

So, what are your plans for getting into college? Are you applying this year or will you be starting off at city college? Do you have a portfolio already partially assembled? I hope this is not stressing you out, but I want you to make a plan now so that you don't crash and burn in November (this is what I did in my senior year). I would love for you to come and talk to me about all of this (you are also welcome to email me).

  2. By the way, your margin noting looked fine. I would definitely start looking for books like Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. One other thing that is confusing me is that you seem to want to go into digital art. Are you strengthening your skills as an illustrator in order to better prepare yourself for that? It would help me to know just so that I can think of people that might be able to help you this year. I know lots of fine artists, and I can also probably get you into contact with some digital artists.

Sorry I didn't get to you yesterday.

  3. Yes, I am more interested in Digital Arts, but I chose illustration because the definition I got from the encyclopedia said there were many forms of it, and Concept art was on the sub categories. And that was my main interest, but I thought that learning about illustration would help me develop my skills toward my main interest of Entertainment Arts.
